A few blocks from Calhoun is either Lake of the Isles or Lake Harriet. In addition the Midtown Greenway has miles of trails that wind through Minneapolis and the western metro area.
History
The Uptown Area has undergone many transformations since it was first created. The Hennepin-Lake Street intersection started as a crossing of two street cars. Lake street was constructed in the 1800s and had already started its commercial development. The stores of Uptown were created from people waiting to transfer street cars. Retailers began locating the stores near streetcar transfers knowing that riders had time to pass. Uptown changed in the 1920s when the automobile was invented. The streetcar era had passed changing Uptown. It wasn’t until the late 1970s that Uptown began to take off. The area became more desirable to young professionals having access to all the lakes.
Shopping
Uptown’s slogan is “normally out of the ordinary,” which is a fitting slogan as the merchandise now available for sale in the stores is unique. Uptown is an entertainment destination with it’s mixture of shops, restaurants, and theaters.
Calhoun Square revitalized the new era in Uptown. Many major developers were attracted to the Hennepin-Lake intersection, and shortly construction was underway with a number of mid-sized chain retailers moving in, changing the gritty neighborhood into one of the Twin Cities finest urban shopping center.
Recreation
Uptown is known for it’s lakes, also nicknamed, “Minneapolis the City of Lakes.” Lake Harriet, Lake Calhoun, Lake of the Isles, and Cedar lake are all fun lakes for walking, biking, running, and rollerblading on the paved paths. Lake Harriet’s bandshell is a place many people come to listen to music that’s fit for all ages. The Uptown Art Fair is one of the biggest attractions with 385 artists, 20 different food vendors, plenty of activities and nightly entertainment during the first full weekend in August.
